I'd highly recommend Denise Gonzales Crisp's new book, Typography (Graphic Design in Context). This work is based on years she spent developing a substantial rethinking of how we understand typography (and thus teach it) as the intersection of various systems — those of form; those of language; and those of technology. This revolutionary book considerably expands the notion of how type works, reorienting values mostly imported from print and dedicated to exclusive notions of "good design." — Louise Sandhaus
