Daniel S. Friedman


Daniel S. Friedman is dean of the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington. Previously he served as director of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Chicago and as director of the School of Architecture and Interior Design at the University of Cincinnati.

Friedman lectures and writes on professional education, public architecture and 20th-century theory. He is co-editor of Plumbing: Sounding Modern Architecture (1997) and has contributed articles and reviews to the Journal of Architectural Education, Architecture, AA Files, AIA Journal, and the Journal of Architecture and Planning, among other periodicals. He recently produced and edited two publications for the American Institute of Architects: Report on University Research (2005) and Report on Integrated Practice (2006).

Friedman served as program chair of the 2005 AIA national convention and has additionally chaired numerous other committees, juries, commissions and events, including the 2007 AIA College of Fellows Latrobe Prize and the 2007 ACSA/AIA Cranbrook Teachers Seminar, "Integrated Practice and the Twenty-first Century Curriculum."

Friedman holds advanced degrees in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, where he completed his PhD on the writings of Louis I. Kahn. He is an NCARB-certified architect registered in the states of Ohio and Illinois. He was elected to the AIA College of Fellows in 2001.
