Hillary Brown

Hillary Brown, FAIA, is founding principal of the firm New Civic Works, which assists public, institutional and nonprofit entities in sustainability planning for buildings and infrastructure, and a professor of architecture at the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City University of New York.

In 1997 Hillary founded New York City's Office of Sustainable Design, publishing the City of New York High Performance Building Guidelines in 1999. By early 2008, more than 60 city projects incorporating its sustainable strategies were in design or construction, or built. Her firm subsequently envisioned and co-authored the companion publication: High Performance Infrastructure Guideline: Best Practices for the Public Right-of-way. Hillary has served on both the national and New York Board of Directors for the U.S. Green Building Council. A former Loeb Fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bosch Public Policy Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, Hillary is a full-time faculty member of the Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York, where she also directs the architecture track of the College’s new M.S. program Sustainability in the Urban Environment, offered with the Grove School of Engineering and Division of Science.
