is associate professor and chair of landscape architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle.
His work focuses on engaging marginalized communities and citizens through community design, design activism and cross-cultural learning. Hou is the editor of Insurgent Public Space: Guerrilla Urbanism and the Remaking of Contemporary Cities
(2010) and coauthor of Greening Cities, Growing Communities: Learning from Urban Community Gardens in Seattle
(2009), which received the Place Book Award from Environmental Design Research Association in 2012. He is also the editor of a forthcoming book, Transcultural Cities: Border-Crossing and Placemaking
(2013). Hou currently serves on the national board of Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility and co-chairs the advisory board of IDEA Space in Seattle.
