Jeffrey Hou


Jeffrey Hou is associate professor and chair of landscape architecture at the University of Washington, Seattle.

His work focuses on engaging marginalized communities and citizens through community design, design activism and cross-cultural learning. Hou is the editor of Insurgent Public Space: Guerrilla Urbanism and the Remaking of Contemporary Cities (2010) and coauthor of Greening Cities, Growing Communities: Learning from Urban Community Gardens in Seattle (2009), which received the Place Book Award from Environmental Design Research Association in 2012. He is also the editor of a forthcoming book, Transcultural Cities: Border-Crossing and Placemaking (2013). Hou currently serves on the national board of Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility and co-chairs the advisory board of IDEA Space in Seattle.
