Timothy Beatley


Timothy Beatley is Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning, School of Architecture, at the University of Virginia. His teaching and research interests are in environmental planning and policy, with emphasis on coastal and natural hazards planning, environmental values and ethics, and biodiversity conservation. His books include Ethical Land UseHabitat Conservation Planning: Endangered Species and Urban Growth, Natural Hazard Mitigation (with David Godschalk, et al.), and An Introduction to Coastal Zone Management (with David Brower and Anna Schwab).

Beatley's current work focuses on sustainable communities, and his recent books include The Ecology of Place (with Kristy Manning), Green Urbanism: Learning from European Cities, Native to Nowhere: Sustaining Home and Community in a Global Age, and Biophilic Cities.
