Hi Bill,

But what do all the powerplants in the US weight? and what about all the electric poles and wires, transformers and coal trains? Or what about the weight of all the oil rigs, tankers, refineries, pipelines, tanker trucks and gas stations?

I'd rather have 700 sf of solar panels 'along with a room full of hardware and batteries'...

There also the issue of water use by power generation, fossil fuel production guzzles significantly more water then the production of photovoltaics (which still require a large amount of water).

So how much does your household weight? Much, much more then even Bucky imagined...

The spatial dimension of energy supply is a critical point, well raised here because we are not paying enough attention to it. Instead we now expect our infrastructural provisions to come from somewhere out of sight. How many of us can look out our kitchen window and see a power plant, a sewage treatment facility, a pumping station or a natural-gas field? Remote sourcing creates an i-drink-your-milkshake mentality where we get to consume at little cost while letting the visual and environmental externalities play out elsewhere. Perhaps the vastly expanded areas on land and sea needed for "green" energy will make us confront Odum's dictum that nothing is free -- least of all space.
