there is certainly a bit of tongue-smacking that is reminiscent of the ciam's reaction to post ww2 reconstruction, with the huge difference that here it is pre-disaster. i agree that low-tech solutions manage to avoid this unpleasantness more successfully. in contrast, an eco-resort looks somewhat ludicrous amidst climate change scenarios.

damon: That's a good question but a really broad statement. Are there other good examples of rising water or is this just a general comment about environmental justice? I ask because in fact in Manhattan the poorer black neighborhoods are mostly on higher ground (think Harlem); same goes for Brooklyn (though it's a big coast line, so there are all kinds of communities on the edge).

SCAPE's approach to the tide rising is grounded in a sustainable way of adressing environmental changes along New York's shore line. It allows one to preserve our environment by instituting subtle physical changes along the shore line with the ultimate outcome of reducing the heavy reliance on mega infrastructure investments for protecting our waterfront. While the other solution are imaginative, they rely heavily in a massive infussion of money into infrastructre thus making them less likely to be implemented in the relatively near future. SCAPE provides contemporary, simple yet titilating solutions to protect our environment while pointing towards the implementation of inexpensive and sustainable ways.
