Thanks for the great article and also the mention! I co-founded In Good Company, mentioned above, but also often work at Indy Hall http://www.indyhall.org/ in Philadelphia where I live. There can't be too many co-working spaces. I love that they are the new norm.

Very interesting article. In Portugal, the coworking model is starting to be adopted by startups and freelances. Our company, Avila Business Centers (http://www.avilabusinesscenter.com) is thinking about providing this kind of service!
kind regards

Articulate & accurate, great piece. We're in the UK and venturing this co-working path as early adopters, its lonely out here and good to find our US cousins so literate on the topic. Re previous comments, the concept is totally applicable to Europe and we could do with some company! ( www.enterprise-hq.co.uk )

Superb concept. What would be extremely interesting would be to analyse the mind-set(s) of those involved. There is a lot of learning going on in such an environment and it is too valuable not to be taken seriously. Incidentally, all these examples come from USA; how easy/difficult do you think it might prove to "export" the concept to Europe which is steeped in trraditionalism?

We've been playing around a lot with the concept of bartering and the possibility of a secondary economy in our coworking space and others. As outline above, the average coworking space is a blend of Designers, Developers, Business people, Media and Artists, which IMO is all that's needed for 90% of the work being done.

It's a new thing to have easy access to all the skills needed to build anything :).

Would love to continue this conversation with anyone interested; I'm affiliated with the Baltimore Beehive (beehivebaltimore.org), and Cahoots (Cahoots.co).

This is a great article and offers some fantastic stats on why coworking is a growing movement that will continue to explode. I'll be moving to Denver in the next few weeks to start another coworking community and I look forward to meeting all of the freelancers and developing a dynamic workspace all over again.

Good article on the emergence of coworking spaces - there are two fantastic coworking spaces that have blossomed that I have worked in/with: Independents Hall in downtown Philadelphia at www.indyhall.org is an inspiring collection of creatives, writers, programmers and others - and iHub in Nairobi, Kenya - www.ihub.co.ke - a hub for some of the most innovative developers in Kenya, is setting the bar quite high for Africa. Both of these coworking spaces are led by smart folks who keep it a community, a learning environment, and inspiring - and sustainable.
