This was nice to come across. I'd done a Google search for "Why does Wim Wenders like Texas so much?" just to see what I'd get. I watched The American Friend and The State of Things this past weekend, and Texas references were obvious; this fact coupled with Paris, Texas itself made my query seem reasonable. (The quote you pulled from Criterion wrapped that up.)

I wasn't born in Texas, but my first memories are from there -- outside of Dallas, of a horizon as big and wide and flat as I've ever known. My family was pulled around by my father's work, too, so we didn't stay long. Still, Texas has some sense of being a spiritual home, since it's the birthplace of (my) memory.

Anyhow, I haven't seen Paris, Texas in more than 10 years, but I'm primed to see it again. Thanks for the piece.

While I enjoyed reading this and any mention of Paris, Texas with it's haunting Ry Cooder score is a delight, I guess to me, the real big, wide America being referred to in this piece starts way after Houston, certainly. It's on the edge of San Antonio-and west. That's where Texas gets interesting and it's where a lot of this film was shot.

Louisiana to Houston may hold personal memories for the author, but the compelling distances and 'emptyness' of the film belong to west Texas.
