The Wedding at Cana: A Vision by Peter Greenaway

For several years now the British director Peter Greenaway — creator of such idiosyncratic films as The Draughtsman's Contract and The Belly of an Architect — has been engaged in an ambitious series of digital video installations, "Nine Classic Paintings Revisited." The first, in Amsterdam, explored the drama and imagery of Rembrandt's The Night Watch; the second, performed in Milan, focused on Leonardo's The Last Supper. The most recent, shown at the 2009 Venice Biennale, recreated Paolo Veronese's The Wedding at Cana in its original location in the refectory at San Giorgio Maggiore. Architectural historian and Places contributing editor Barbara Penner describes an experience that blends — and bends — genres.
