Places and Faces
Which woman should be on the new $10? Jessica nominates the writer and scientist Rachel Carson (1907–1964), who with her book Silent Spring founded the modern environmentalist movement:
She was a real ambassador for, evangelist for, advocate for the idea that we, all of us—contribute to the world of our making, and that we have a responsibility that’s greater than the sum of our parts.
Because she thought about the planet, there’s a kind of largesse to that question, to thinking about not just politics or not just freedom but thinking about the whole world, that makes her worthy.
On this episode of The Observatory, Jessica and guest host Willy Wong also discuss:
- ArtPlace America
- The Great Good Place
- The Internet Archive and the Wayback Machine for seeing old web pages
- Have a Nice Day Post-It Note left by prison escapees Richard Matt and David Sweat
- Miley Cyrus apologizes for slant-eyed photo
- Multiracial in America: a Pew Research Center survey
- Alex Lin
