Valerie Casey is head of design at Walmart.
Casey, who has worked at design firms and held business and product roles, sees the idea that designers are advocates for consumers as a kind of trap, especially in large organizations:
That relinquishes the responsibility from so many other groups, from business, from marketing, from other retail partners. And when you hold that so closely, it means that others don’t have access to it.…
I really want to be a proponent for having a more multifaceted type of designer: not just being a customer advocate but actually understanding how the customer needs intersect with the business needs.
