Sam Winston

On this episode Debbie talks to Sam Winston about his life-long fascination with type. “Letterforms are amazing, they are these tiny, tiny little symbols, little black blobs, and it’s mindblowing.”

“I come from a world of stories, and on my imagination, I float. I have sailed across a sea of words to ask if you will come away with me.” Who could resist an invitation like that? It’s the beginning of A Child of Books, a collaboration between Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston. It’s a picture book for children, but it’s also a tour de force of Sam Winston’s brilliant typographic images in which objects are built from the texts of classic children’s stories. Text and typography are central to Sam Winston’s art, which goes beyond books to sculpture, collage, drawing, performance, and even poetry.
