Sukkah City Documentary to Premiere in Union Square Park

Union Square’s High-Concept Sukkahs from Jewish Daily Forward.

In 2010, 600 architects from over 40 countries entered one of the largest architectural competitions of the last decade. Their design brief: to re-imagine the 3,000-year-old sukkah within its traditional halachic design constraints. Thomas de Monchaux covered the contest for Design Observer.

Jason Hutt’s documentary film tracks the competition from jury day, as an all-star cast of architects, academics and critics (Thom Mayne, Paul Goldberger, Ron Arad) debate the merits of the 600 submissions; to the construction, installation and exhibition of the twelve winning structures in Union Square in the heart of New York City; and the critical and popular response of some of the 200,000 New Yorkers who attended the two-day exhibition.

“Rather than religious, the film is ultimately about the artistic process of designers and architects, and more broadly, ideas and the execution of ideas,” says The Atlantic.

A free public outdoor screening of the film will be shown in the North Plaza of Union Square Park at 7pm on September 22nd.
