The Hinglish Project

What do you get when you combine typography and tourism? If the Indian Ministry of Tourism is involved, you get The Hinglish Project. The Hinglish Project “aims to demystify individual letters and its script and make India more approachable.” In so doing, they’ve created a free downloadable font that showcases a hybrid of Hindi’s Devanagari script combined with an English Roman script, based on the phonetic sounds they share.

Meena Kadri at Random Specific interviews Shirin Johari of Mudra Communications – the mastermind behind The Hinglish Project – who answered her questions about the evolution of the project, the difficulty of creating a hybrid typeface and recommendations for what to do when you visit India.
