The Observatory: Words, Pictures, Sounds
On this episode, Jessica Helfand and Michael Bierut look ahead to Design Observer’s What Design Sounds Like, a one-day symposium in New York on February 21st, and to Everything Is Design: The Work of Paul Rand, an exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York that runs from February 25th to July 19th.
They also discuss the Thesis Book Project, a joint initiative of Design Observer and Blurb. Jessica talks about her thesis book, a 194-page investigation of the square. Here’s what her adviser had to say:

Jessica Helfand is an artist and writer based in New England. A former critic at Yale School of Art and one of the founding editors of Design Observer, she is the author of several books on visual culture including Self Reliance, Design: The Invention of Desire, and Face: A Visual Odyssey.
