Cover by Carin Goldberg, 1986. Goldberg was commissioned by Vintage Books to design a new cover “in the tradition of the previous Ulysses cover” by E. McKnight Kauffer, and she was “specifically asked to play with the big capital "U" and to maintain the typographic direction” of the earlier covers. “There wasn’t much of a hook or a concept to work with," Goldberg later noted. "The content of the book was specifically irrelevant [to] the brief … style was the only way to approach the thing.”
