Emma Donoghue
In novelist Emma Donoghue’s dark world, there is salvation. The characters in her book face unimaginable dangers, yet their creator ultimately saves them. No matter what the past has inflicted, the future holds a renewal. Emma Donaghue is probably best known for Room, the book and the movie adaptation. She’s obsessed with history and loves the mundane historical details that color her narratives. She said if she had a time machine she’d transport herself to late 18th century England as a rich spinster of scandalous habits.
Debbie talks to novelist Emma Donoghue about gender, race, and the value of fiction. “Fiction is an amazing technology for creating empathy.”
