[JH]NYC 1964-1982

For many years I worked as a photographer for advertising and text books. Recently as I was trying to bring order to my 35mm. negative files I realized that a group of b/w pictures taken not for work but for my own pleasure are representative of an era in NYC. These pictures were taken approximately between 1964 and 1982. It was a pleasure for me to wander around the city snapping scenes that caught my eye.

It seems in reviewing them, the qualities that most often intrigued me were the relationships of people to one another and sometimes to me. Another aspect that now draws my attention is a slight sense of mystery. What was occurring as a business man in Chinatown was entering a building at the same time as a young boy was being dragged into another door?

On the plaza at Lincoln Center, what was the conversation between the motor scooter riding security guard and the group of mischievous looking boys?

In Harlem what was afoot with the four children? Were they being mean to the little fellow? In Riverside Park why did seven teenage boys have a cat with them?

Questions such as these did not occur to me at the time, but looking back, the ambivalence of the scenes is what draws my attention.
