Syrian Refugee, Lesbos, Greece, 2015
Photo by Ron Haviv / VII. Syrian Refugee, Lesbos, Greece, 2015.
From the photographer: “A Syrian refugee looks back at Turkey after completing part of his journey to a new life. Standing on the beaches of Lesbos, Greece, I was in awe of the courage displayed by the people that were arriving. Many landed with nothing but a mobile phone, ID and some cash—and some with even less. Watching families and young teens amongst others, all hopeful, when they first stepped onto European shores was one of the most emotional experiences I have had as a photographer. What was most difficult was when I explained to many that their journey had not ended—it was just their next step into the unknown.”
