The Way of Chopsticks
The Way of Chopsticks (on view at the Philadelphia Art Alliance through Dec. 29) explores Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen’s memories of growing up in Communist China and juxtaposes those hardships with their bilingual 11-year-old daughter’s very different, very contemporary upbringing. Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen explore these ideas through the lens of domesticity, looking at basic household objects and his-and-hers relationship/gender dynamics to explore themes of collaboration vs. individuality, group-think vs. independence, past vs. present.
