Grace Jun is the Executive Director of Open Style Lab, a nonprofit that aims to make fashion accessible to people with disabilities.
Jun will spend weeks observing an individual client before attempting to design a solution:
I watch how they get up in the morning, how they talk about the clothes they have in their closet — it’s very interesting, the attitudes they have about fashion and clothing, too — and also just how they maneuver with daily life chores.
This close observation has led to a rain jacket for wheelchair users that a bike messenger could also wear.

Jessica Helfand, a founding editor of Design Observer, is an award-winning graphic designer and writer and a former contributing editor and columnist for Print, Communications Arts and Eye magazines. A member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and a recent laureate of the Art Director’s Hall of Fame, Helfand received her B.A. and her M.F.A. from Yale University where she has taught since 1994.
