S5E9: Manuel Lima

Manuel Lima is a UX design manager at Google and the founder of Visual Complexity.

In his books about circles and trees, Lima traced these fundamental forms back through the centuries. And in conversation, he talks about

how hard it is for us to humans to invent new visual metaphors because, we just prefer the old, the familiar, right? it’s another bias, familiarity bias

But we are facing many new challenges: complexity, a lot of new data, a lot of new things that we have to make sense of. And these new challenges cannot be understood by using the visual metaphors we’ve been using for centuries.
